Hoppípolla - Sigur Rós

I found this song this morning, and I’ve been listening to it on repeat all day.  It’s just so awesome!  I love the dynamics, how it builds up.  And the textures are just heavenly.  The piano melody is just so uplifting!  I have no clue what the lyrics are, but it really matter, because the song is just so happy feeling!

So I’ve finally added The Beatles to my iTunes library.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had it on my hard drive library for months. But I never took the time to add all the albums (even though it only really takes a few moments).

So my iTunes library now sits at a comfortable 35GB, and about 5000 songs. However, my actual library of music is a hefty 75GB, I just haven’t felt like loading everything into iTunes yet. I like my clean library as it is right now.

Back to The Beatles though, remember about two years ago when they released a remastered box set of The Beatles? Well they remastered the albums in mono (one speaker) and stereo (two speakers).

Which made me wonder, which is better? Mono or Stereo? All the original albums up until The Beatles White Album were originally mixed in mono. I’m trying to decide which version sounds better for myself, but what do you think? Have you heard either version, and which do you prefer? Or, did you even realize there was such a thing as mono and stereo?

So last week, my little sis asked me to create a ringtone for her using the audio from the Potter Puppet Pals video “The Mysterious Ticking Noise”.  So that’s what I did.  I took a section of the video and looped it over and over again.  

And it got really annoying.  Really fast.

Q:how do you split the vocals and instrumentals in a song in garageband?

I’ve had this question in my box for probably about a year, and I’ve only gotten to it now.  So anyways, here it is…

Simply put, you can’t.  

And here’s why.

There’s no way to split vocals and instrument tracks.  When bands record their music, they record all their instruments— the guitar, bass, drums, etc— and their vocals into separate tracks, and then layer them.  So when they are mixing down the song to finalize it, they combine all the layered tracks into one mixed-down file, like an MP3.  During this mix-down process they can make separate versions.  For example, they could make the vocals louder than the instruments, or vice versa.  Subsequently, they could also create a version with only the instrumental.  You could think of all 

That being said, there are ways to “try” to make the vocals less present in the music.  Without getting too technical, this would involve cutting out frequencies in the song which the vocals are in (this is normally anywhere from 80-1200 Hz).  However, because vocals are in the same range as most guitars, pianos, and other instruments, cutting out these frequencies would also cut out some of the instruments as well.  

So when I say “try”, I really mean, your song will probably sound like crap if you do this.  

While there are many programs out there that claim to remove or extract vocals, these will essentially do the same thing as what I’ve already explained.  

However, just because you can’t split a song yourself doesn’t mean that instrumental versions of songs don’t exist.  Google it!  If there has been an instrumental version released, it will know.  

So there you go annon.  I hope I answered your question without getting too confused with the soundgeeky-ness.
